Brentwood splits fairly cleanly in two, and Sunset Boulevard is roughly the line. South of it you get the flats and the tree-lined blocks around San Vicente. North of it the ground climbs into the ridges and canyons of the Santa Monica Mountains, and that changes the job.
The housing runs all over the place. Spanish Revival and Tudor a few streets from Cape Cod. Up in Crestwood Hills you get some of the best mid-century modern in the city, much of it post and beam, built in the 1950s and 60s. Those houses often came with lean architectural fireplaces that were never designed for the way people burn now.
Canyon access is its own thing. Mandeville, Kenter and Sullivan all narrow as you go up, and roof access on a hillside property takes longer than it does on a flat lot. We build that into the schedule, so the window you get for a Brentwood job is a real one.

Much of Brentwood above Sunset sits inside a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone. The hillside border with open land runs almost uninterrupted, and the canyons funnel wind. Residents up here already know this. The Palisades Fire pushed into Mandeville Canyon in January 2025 and most of Brentwood Hills evacuated.
Chimneys matter here for two reasons that pull opposite ways.
Going out, a fireplace without a working spark arrestor can put live embers on a roof. Going in, an open or damaged flue is a way for wind-driven embers to get into a house during a fire. Firebrands can travel a long way ahead of an actual flame front, so a chimney a mile from anything burning is not automatically out of it.
A cap with an intact arrestor screen handles both. Small piece of steel, cheap to keep in good order, and one of the few things on a chimney that is. We check yours on every visit up here and tell you if it has rusted through.

Yes, both, along with Sullivan. Hillside properties are a normal part of the work here. If your roof pitch or access makes something impossible, we will say so on the day. You do not pay to find that out.
If you are above Sunset you are likely in a very high fire hazard zone, and a cap with an intact arrestor screen is worth having regardless. It stops embers leaving the flue and it stops wind-driven embers getting in. We check the condition of yours on every visit.
Yes. Crestwood Hills and the surrounding hills have plenty of them. They are built differently to a standard masonry firebox, and the flue is often narrower, so they need a slightly different approach. We have worked on them before.
Once a year for most homes, before you start burning for the season. If the fireplace sits unused most of the year, which is common here, an inspection is still worth doing. Debris and nesting build up whether you light it or not.
