    Glendale

Sweeps, inspections and repairs across Glendale

We cover sweeping, inspection and repair across Glendale, from Adams Hill and Rossmoyne up into Verdugo Woodlands, Chevy Chase Canyon and the foothill streets.

Glendale runs from a flat downtown up into the foothills of the Verdugo and San Gabriel mountains, and the housing climbs with it. The older neighborhoods, Adams Hill, Rossmoyne and the streets around Brand Park, are full of 1920s and 30s Spanish and Craftsman homes, and above them the land rises into Verdugo Woodlands, Glenoaks Canyon and Chevy Chase Canyon.

A lot of these chimneys are original masonry, laid nearly a century ago, and that age shows. Old lime mortar loosens, crowns crack and flue liners wear, and this stretch of foothill has felt its share of earthquakes, which does old brick no favors. Reading that wear is most of the job here.

Access shifts with the ground. Downtown and the flats are simple, while the canyon and hillside streets climb, narrow and twist. We plan the roof access and timing before the visit rather than work it out on your street.

We hired Chimney Brothers to repair and rebuild two masonry fireplaces, including firebox and smoke chamber work, and we had a great experience overall. Joseph was involved from start to finish and was consistently on site, not just managing from a distance. He took the time to explain what was going on, answered questions clearly, and made sure the work was done right. It was reassuring to see him present and actively involved while the crew was working. The team showed up when they said they would, worked carefully, and didn’t rush through the job. When I had questions or wanted to look at specific areas, Joseph was patient and responsive, and made sure everything we discussed was addressed before wrapping up. The final result looks solid and well done, and the whole process felt transparent and professional. I appreciate the hands-on approach and would feel comfortable recommending Chimney Brothers to anyone who needs serious fireplace or chimney repair.

I had the pleasure of working with Joseph from Chimney Brothers. Great experience overall, we transitioned from wood burning for gas, we had a few cracks which we repaired. They painted our firebox and help us choose an amazing new set! Can’t praise them enough. I really appreciate the good workmanship and the patience Joseph had. I’ll definitely be calling them up when I’m ready to do my other fireplace!!

I just had the chimney Brothers install custom glass doors for me. Absolutely love the result! They also swept the chimney! Communication was great, time line was also pretty quick. Only two weeks for the moment we moved forward. I really enjoyed working with Joseph He was so pleasant and not pushy which I really appreciate. This is your go to Chimney company!

I had the opportunity to work with joseph From Chimney Brothers on one of my rental properties. A previous tenant left the property in a bad condition. I called a couple different companies come out and inspect my fireplace, a few of them seemed fishy. I also checked The chimney brothers license and bond certificates to ensure they didn’t have any ongoing lawsuits or a bad rep with the CSLB. Joseph came and installed for me glass doors, custom gas logs and purged my smoke chamber. The job was done in a very quick and professional manner. They didn’t leave any debris and I was super impressed. I would definitely recommend them!!! If I could give 10 stars I would. Great experience, and I truly found a trustworthy company that I’m sure I’ll use in my next properties.

Chimney services always comes with lots skepticism; it's not a usual services like plumbing, and it's not a necessity. Selecting CB is a right call. Joseph is pleasant to work with; he appears knowledgeable, considerate and delivered as promised. We took his advices and went through major works. The result and process is satisfactory. Highly recommend.

Joseph was awesome. He came out to inspect the chimney on our first home and was on time, friendly and super knowledgeable. He walked us through everything, explained why the chimney needed a cleaning, and pointed out that the galvanized chase cover should be replaced to help prevent future water damage. As first-time homeowners, we really appreciated how informative and thorough he was. He took the time to answer all of our questions and explain everything in a way that was easy to understand. We left feeling much more confident and would definitely recommend Joseph and The Chimney Brothers!

Needed to clean our chimney for our 1 story home which had been neglected for about 13 years. Joseph came and did a efficient evaluation and quote for not just a cleaning but also for resurfacing. We opted for just the cleaning at this time. Joseph again came out and did a quick and clean job, no hassle. He was kind and easy to talk to. Will definitely call Chimney Brothers when we are ready for the resurfacing.

Our rampart-styled-design chimney had significant cracking all over from top to bottom. Inquired for a estimate to repair the cracking. Received a very competitive quote from C.B and approved the job. Joseph and his team member came promptly and explained the process, answered all our questions, then immediately got to work. They are extremely professional that after cement was filled in cracks they were able to reproduce the same exact lines and texture of chimney. They are highly efficient. The tuck pointing, repainting, and cap installation was all done on the same day. The outstanding quality is very evident from before and after pics. I will not hesitate one bit to contact them for all my chimney needs. Extremely satisfied!! Thank you C.B.

Chimney Brothers are fantastic! Joseph came out to our house for a consultation and about a week later was back to install a new gas system with ceramic logs that was 1,000 times better than the existing system. He was super professional, courteous and performed excellent, clean work. We are beyond thrilled with the results. Thank you guys!

Old brick, foothill brush and earthquake wear

Age is the first thing about a Glendale chimney. Many of these stacks were built in the 1920s and 30s, and mortar that old gives up its grip over the decades. We find crumbling joints, cracked crowns and worn clay flue tiles, the ordinary wear of a chimney that has stood for the better part of a century.

This is earthquake country too, sitting near the Verdugo and Sierra Madre faults, and shaking is hard on tall masonry. Even a moderate quake can crack a crown, open a joint or shift a flue tile, sometimes in ways you would never spot from the living room.

The foothills carry brush, and a Santa Ana can drive fire down the Verdugo and San Gabriel slopes. A sound spark arrestor on the cap keeps an ember inside your flue, which counts for more the closer your street sits to the open hillside.

You can read some of it from the yard. Look for a cracked or leaning crown, rust on the cap and stair-step cracks in the brick. If the mortar crumbles under a screwdriver, the chimney is due for a proper look, and after a quake or a windstorm is a sensible time.

    Glendale questions

How quickly can you get out to Glendale?

Usually the same week. We are in the foothill neighborhoods often, so a Glendale visit fits in without a long wait. Call and we will give you the next open day and a realistic window.

My house is from the 1920s. Is the old chimney still safe?

Often yes, but age is the whole question. Old mortar, a cracked crown or a worn liner can let heat or water into the house, and quakes add to that wear. An inspection tells you where it really stands, with photos.

Could an earthquake have damaged my chimney?

It can, and the damage is not always obvious. Shaking cracks crowns, opens mortar joints and shifts flue tiles up top where you cannot see it. After a notable quake it is worth a look, especially on an older masonry stack.

There is brush on the hill above me. Do I need a spark arrestor?

Yes. The Verdugo and San Gabriel slopes can burn on a dry wind, and a spark arrestor keeps an ember from leaving your flue. If yours is missing or rusted through, we would fit one before fire season.

How often should a Glendale chimney be swept?

Once a year for most homes that burn wood, before the first cold night. Even light use builds creosote, and on an older flue the yearly visit is when we catch a crack or a worn liner early.

Will you make a mess in the house?

No. We cover everything before starting and run the vacuum throughout. You should not be able to tell we were there.
